Everything you need to know about custom rigid boxes

Custom rigid boxes — also called setup boxes — are built from thick, pressed paperboard that is wrapped in a printed cover material rather than folded flat like a standard carton. That construction is why they feel substantial in the hand, hold their shape, and give a product the structured, premium unboxing shoppers associate with higher-end brands. They are the format you see around fine cosmetics, electronics, jewelry, confectionery, spirits, apparel, and subscription boxes, where the packaging is part of the product experience.

Because every rigid box is made to order, the right specification depends on what goes inside and how you want it to open. This guide walks through the common box styles and closures, the board thickness and wrap materials that drive the look and feel, the finishing options that set the brand tone, how the ordering process runs from artwork to delivery, and how bulk pricing works. If you already know what you need, you can request a custom quote at any point.

Why go rigid

A rigid box makes a product feel expensive before it’s even opened

Folding cartons do the job, but they flex, dent, and read as ordinary. A custom rigid box holds its shape, protects what’s inside, and delivers a slow, deliberate unboxing that customers remember and share. Whether you’re launching a cosmetics line, shipping electronics, or building a subscription brand, rigid packaging signals quality the moment it’s picked up.

Premium brand feel

Thick board, edge-to-edge printing, and finishes like foil and soft-touch make packaging that looks and feels considered — an experience worth photographing and sharing.

Structural protection

Non-collapsible walls and snug custom inserts hold products securely in transit and on the shelf, reducing movement, scuffs, and damage on the way to your customer.

Box styles & construction

Rigid box styles: which construction fits your product?

Rigid boxes share the same sturdy setup-box construction but open in different ways. The style you choose shapes the unboxing moment and how the product is presented. Board thickness drives how solid the box feels — here’s how the common thickness options and packaging types compare.

Rigid board thickness options

Thicker greyboard feels more substantial and protects heavier items; 1.5–2mm suits most retail and gift packaging.

Wall thickness by packaging type

Rigid setup boxes use board several times thicker than a folded carton, which is why they hold shape and feel premium.

Materials & durability

Built from solid board and finished to feel premium

The core of every rigid box is thick, compressed greyboard (chipboard) — the same sturdy panel behind hardcover books and premium gift boxes. That board is cut, formed into walls, and then wrapped in a printed cover material such as coated art paper, textured specialty stock, linen, leatherette, or kraft. Because the board doesn’t fold flat, the finished box keeps its structure and resists the denting and flexing you get with lighter cartons.

The wrap and finish are where the brand comes through. Lamination (matte, gloss, or soft-touch), foil stamping, embossing, and spot UV change how the box looks and feels, while custom inserts made from foam, EVA, molded pulp, or die-cut board hold the product securely and complete the presentation. You choose the combination that matches your product’s weight, price point, and brand tone.

  • Rigid greyboard core — thick, non-collapsible, holds its shape
  • Printed wrap papers — coated, textured, linen, leatherette or kraft
  • Lamination options — matte, gloss or soft-touch finish
  • Foil & embossing — metallic accents and tactile detail
  • Custom inserts — foam, EVA, molded pulp or die-cut board
  • Secure closures — magnets, ribbons, neck rims and clasps

Bulk pricing

How custom rigid box pricing works

Custom rigid boxes are priced per unit, and the per-box price drops as your quantity climbs. Your final quote depends on several things: box style and size, board thickness, wrap material and finishes, inserts and closures, and total quantity. Larger runs and simpler finishes bring the unit cost down the most. Ordering custom rigid boxes wholesale at higher volumes typically earns the best per-unit rate.

FAQ

Custom rigid box questions, answered

What is a rigid box?
A rigid box (or setup box) is made from thick, compressed paperboard wrapped in a printed cover material. Unlike a folding carton, it doesn’t collapse flat — it holds its shape, feels substantial, and is the format used for premium and luxury packaging.
What’s the difference between a rigid box and a folding carton?
Folding cartons are made from thin paperboard that ships and stores flat, then folds up. Rigid boxes use board several times thicker that stays formed. Rigid boxes feel more premium and protect better; folding cartons are lighter and lower cost.
What materials are rigid boxes made from?
The structural core is thick greyboard (chipboard). It’s wrapped in a printed cover material such as coated art paper, textured specialty stock, linen, leatherette, or kraft, and can be finished with lamination, foil, or embossing.
How thick is the board in a rigid box?
Common greyboard thicknesses range from about 1.2mm up to 3mm. Around 1.5–2mm suits most retail and gift packaging, while heavier products or a more deluxe feel often use 2–3mm board.
What box styles do you offer?
Common styles include magnetic book-style boxes, two-piece lid-and-base boxes, shoulder-neck boxes, drawer/slide boxes, and hinged-lid boxes. The right one depends on your product and the unboxing experience you want.
Can I get a magnetic closure?
Yes. Magnetic book-style and hinged-lid boxes use hidden magnets for a clean, satisfying close. Other closures include ribbon pulls, neck-seated lids, and clasps — tell us your preference in your quote request.
Do you make custom inserts?
Yes. We produce inserts from foam, EVA, molded pulp, or die-cut board, cut to cradle your product securely and complete the presentation. Inserts are quoted with the box based on your product dimensions.
What finishes are available?
Options include matte, gloss, and soft-touch lamination, foil stamping (gold, silver, and colored), embossing and debossing, and spot UV. Finishes can be combined to match your brand’s look and feel.
Can you print the inside of the box?
Yes. Interior printing on the lid and base is a popular way to extend branding into the unboxing moment. Add it to your quote request and we’ll include it in the proof.
What’s the minimum order quantity?
Custom rigid box runs commonly start in the low hundreds, and per-unit pricing improves as quantity grows. Share your target quantity in a quote request and we’ll confirm the minimum and pricing for your spec.
What artwork format do you need?
Vector files (AI, EPS, PDF, or SVG) give the cleanest print, but we can work from high-resolution files too. Send whatever you have and we’ll let you know if we need anything sharper, then build a dieline and proof before production.
Can you match my exact brand colors?
Yes. We print and finish to your specified Pantone (PMS) colors across the wrap, print, and foil so your boxes match the rest of your brand materials.
How do I get a quote?
Use the custom quote form with your product dimensions, box style, quantity, materials, and artwork, or call (929) 605-4397. You’ll get pricing and a production timeline back quickly.
